Opportunities to do something, or Take Human Action!
Want to shrink budgets, push back against collectivism, or work on coalitions to decriminalize drugs or protect natural/property rights (2nd Amendment, anyone?)? You can make the most impact at the local level on your school board, city council, or other local entities. We saw the power of nullification in the last few years when local leaders refused to enforce authoritarian edicts from state and federal governments and their public health commissars. Not sure what to do? Check out Run as Libertarian. Although not closer than a half day’s drive for us here in Ohio, the Take Human Action Tour is another resource, providing candidate and campaign training at each event. The closest to us is Chicago, April 15-16, and Nashville, April 22-23. These are coming up fast, so be sure to book your event ticket and make travel plans if you’re interested. The Libertarian Party will also be providing candidate and campaign training during the Region 3 Conference in Dayton on July 28-30.
The Defend the Guard movement is gaining momentum around the country, and we can take action here in Ohio against the warfare state. In short, Defend the Guard legislation would prohibit a state’s National Guard units from being deployed into active combat without a formal declaration of war by Congress, as provided by the U.S. Constitution. The primary sponsor for this legislation in the Ohio House of Representatives is Rep. Ron Ferguson (R-District 96), whose phone number is (614) 466-3735. Call and see how we can get this important legislation moving in our state. You can also support Defend the Guard with donations through the Bring Our Troops Home website. This movement is a key component of our anti-war strategy, and a good, recent summary can be heard here:
Another local, decentralized way to get involved is to start or revive a LP county affiliate, especially if you are outside of the major metropolitan areas. Here’s a map of the current status of Ohio counties and their LPO affiliates, or lack thereof. Starting a county affiliate takes three people and a bank account - that’s it! These grassroots organizations are important for the support of local candidates and issues. Plus, we will need to collect signatures to potentially get a failed comedian and podcaster on the ballot for President as an Independent in 2024, and county affiliates will play an important role.
Lastly, if you’ve made it this far, consider joining our Ohio LP Mises Caucus team as an organizer. We’re asking for 4-10 hours a month of your time, and the National Mises Caucus provides organizer training to get you started. If interested, please email us at oh_organizers@misescaucus.com.
